Homeless Education
Homeless Education
Definition of Homelessness Under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act
If your family lives:
- in a shelter, motel, vehicle, or campground
- in an abandoned building, trailer, or other inadequate accommodations
- with friends or relatives, because you cannot find or afford housing
Then you have the right to:
- go to school, no matter where you live or how long you have lived there.
- continue in the school you attended before you became homeless or the school you last attended.
- receive transportation to the school you attended before you became homeless.
- enroll in school without giving a permanent address.
- enroll and attend classes while the school arranges for the transfer of school records and/or immunization records.
- educational assistance under the McKinney-Vento.
If your family lives in any of the above situations, you may be eligible for some assistance under the McKinney-Vento Act. Our district homeless liaison can assist in determining eligibility for programs.
How do I know if my family is eligible?
The Student Residency Questionnaire or a conversation with our McKinney Viento Liaison determines your eligibility. The Student Residency Questionnaire and Education Rights are provided to families:
- Upon enrollment
- At the beginning of the school year with student information update paperwork
- Once during the second semester
